The New Apple Watch Won’t be Linked to an iPhone

If you’re looking for the latest computer hardware technology, pay close attention to the following: Tech giant Apple (NASDAQ:$AAPL) is preparing to release a new Apple Watch. However, according to an unnamed source close to the matter, the watch will not be linked to an iPhone for key functions such as making calls or streaming music.

The sources said Apple will be launching the next generation Apple Watch next month. This is also when the company is expected to unveil three new iPhone models.

Today’s news is significant as the added cellular connectivity on the watch will allow people to carry out tasks without ever needing an iPhone present.

Additionally, having the watch released in September makes total sense as the California-based company has already disclosed plans to release watchOS 4 in the fall. This wearable operating system will include a Siri-based watchface and new features around music.

Win-Win Situation

Despite the benefits, cellular connectivity could prove to be a problem for Apple, as it can be battery draining. However, if Apple can manage to create a battery-efficient device, then it will be a big win for the company.

“It is a win-win for Apple, as it will drive up the average selling price of the device because they will be more expensive,” Neil Shah told CNBC. “It will cater to the niche market of health and fitness users who don’t want to carry their iPhone when they go for a run. It will also be good for enterprise use cases.”

CNBC spoke to a source close to the matter and this source backed up an earlier report from Bloomberg which said that Intel will be the main supplier of the modems required for cellular capability on the Apple Watch. In addition, that report also said AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint intend to sell the device, citing sources.
